Fig 1: SIP Trunking Deployment in Business
Today’s competitive markets are forcing businesses to implement or upgrade their communication infrastructures to a higher level. Most of the businesses today turned their focus to SIP trunking for enhancing their business communication standard.
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) Trunking is a methodology which enables you to create and control communication sessions on the basis of VoIP telephony. Using SIP trunking you can establish a direct connection between your company and the Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP). SIP trunking has proved that it is highly cost effective and helps to attain the ROI (Return on Investment) on a faster way. This is so because, SIP trunking is very easier and less expensive to design, operate, maintain and upgrade.
Deployment of SIP Trunking
Bringing SIP trunking to your business is a crucial task. Deployment of SIP trunking involves a series of steps.
You can connect a SIP trunk to your business either via IP-PBX or via Mediation Server. The mediation server is used for encrypting, decrypting or data translation between Office communications server deployment on one side and the world beyond on the other.
SIP trunking can be deployed into the business in two ways; deploying with media server and deploying with an IP-PBX.
Deploying SIP Trunking via Mediation Server
Every mediation server contains two interfaces or network adapters. They are internal interface and external interface. The external interface of the mediation server is also referred to as gateway interface because it was used to connect to an IP-PSTN gateway or IP- PBX. While deploying the SIP trunking the external interface is connected to the SIP trunk.
There are many ways to deploy a SIP trunk to your organization such as through Internet or through a line which is dedicated for your business. This may or may not share the bandwidth with other IP traffic. The dedicated line is sometimes referred to as leased-line and usually will be a T1 or fiber optic line. This leased line between the company and the ITSP often costs very high, but this can carry all the simultaneous calls. It also offers the highest degree of security and reliability. You can change your connection type if your company has lower call volumes or less stringent security and availability needs. The various types of connection include;
- Dedicated line (leased line) with no other traffic
It has a lot of advantages. The leased line will be more secure, reliable, and has highest call-carrying capacity. It doesn’t require VPN. The only limitation of this leased line is that they are very expensive.
- Dedicated line shared with other IP traffic.
It is very secure and doesn’t require VPN. The demerit of this connection is that the excessive IP traffic can interfere with VoIP operations.
- Public (Internet) connection
The internet connection has many disadvantages compared with other connections. It is least secure and reliable. Also the call carrying capacity is low. It requires VPN. The only merit is that the internet connection is very cheap (less expensive) compared with others.
The major Deployment Steps Involved
Though the deployment steps of SIP trunks may differ from one implementation to another, the key steps constitute the following;
- Plan for migrating to SIP trunking
A smooth and efficient SIP implementation that satisfies your expectations can be performed through proper planning. A detailed analysis process which includes the equipment inventory at each site, noting the number of trunks installed, etc can be done through a detailed planning. In this step cost analysis and the impact of SIP trunking in the network can be determined.
- Evaluate Available SIP Trunk Offerings
Comparing with the traditional PRI services, the SIP trunk offerings may vary considerably. Hence the capabilities and terms of every service provider must be carefully evaluated before implementing the SIP trunk. The experience and efficiency of the service provider in deploying business level SIP services, design flexibility, business continuity, feature innovations, etc should be carefully understood.
- Conduct a Pilot Trial
The things you learned during the planning and the evaluation steps should be applied to the real SIP trunk installation. In this step, you have to install the SIP trunk, configure the hardware and software and start running test calls across the network to see how it works with your environment. Major things to be noted before starting trial are the success criteria and the duration. This helps you to complete the process within time and also to make it a success.
- Begin Production service
Once you complete the above three steps, then you can directly move on the production section. In order to carry out this well user training is essential. This will join the SIP trunk services using the same methods you used for the pilot user community. TDM backup access and QoS requirements should be properly undertaken. This helps you in uplifting the quality and standard of business through the deployment of SIP trunking.
These four steps are basic guidelines or steps followed for the successful deployment of SIP trunking in your business. Many more detailed deployment steps are there but they may differ based on the nature of the SIP trunking service provider.
